Subject: 133 Million Dollar School Budget on Council's Monday night agenda

Folks:

Part of the City Manager's budget submission to the City Council, which is on Monday's Council night agenda, is the 133 million dollars to be allocated to our public school system (the overall budget is about 426 millions dollars).

The various bits and pieces of the school budget can be read at http://www.cpsd.us/cpsdir/school_budget.cfm . If you're like me, you'll read them and wonder how anyone can spend so much money and give such a vague description of how it's spent. You may also wonder, if you've read past CPS budgets, how we expect to get significantly different results with a budget that is very thin on explaining relevant new initiatives.

Anyhow, whether you like the CPS budget or think it needs work, it's a lot of money and it directly impacts most of our kids. It'd be great if you could check out the details and come to Council on Monday and share your thoughts with the Council. You may also email the entire Council at Council@Cambridgema.gov. To speak at the Council, you can call 349-4280 between 9 and 3 Monday or show up between 5:30 and 6 PM (though we close public comment earlier than 6 if we run out of speakers). Per our rules, speakers get 3 minutes each for public comment.

Also, the Council will review the school budget in particular starting at 5:30 on May 12th, if folks want to come comment then (5 minute limit because it's a subcommittee hearing). The more people who seem to pay attention to these issues, the better.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
