Letters to Agencies
Board of Zoning Appeals
Councilor Kelley's support for 22 Water Street
Dear Board Members:
I write in support of application #9762 for 22 Water Street. This is a variance request that I have supported in the past, as has the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the project is reliant upon other actions taking place on adjacent and nearby lands, actions that, through no fault of 22 Water Street's proponent, have not come to fruition. The delay of these actions has led to the expiration of the original variance for 22 Water Street and it is my hope that this fact will not reflect poorly on the proponents' desire to obtain a new variance for the same project.
Once constructed, 22 Water Street will add much to the neighborhood, as evidenced by past local support for the project, and I hope that the BZA will support this application.
I am also attaching my letter of support from August, 2007, in case you might find that note useful.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns about this communication.
Many thanks.

Dear BZA Members:
I write in support of the variance request for 22 Water Street, Case #9529.
I attended two planning meetings for this project with the East Cambridge Planning Team (ECPT) and was very impressed with the proponents' desire to meet neighborhood concerns, accommodate the City's planning desires and produce a project that will wind up being a plus for the overall community.
I was particularly impressed at how hard the proponents worked to incorporate the issues brought forward by the ECPT. Issues ranging in scope from access to the project's open space to the type of café to the way the driveway crosses the multiuse path to the color of the siding were all discussed very thoroughly and to the satisfication of ECPT members. Given the knowledge ECPT members have of what works for their community, that the Team supports this project is a very good indication at how successful the proponents were at addressing their concerns. Time and again, the proponents explained how, in a perfect world, they might do something differently, but because of zoning restrictions or long-term planning contraints or future traffic concerns, their proposal was the best possible fit for the site.
In short, given the zoning constraints of the site, the context of the site's location and the support of the immediate community, I hope that you will aprove this variance request.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this communication.
Sincerely,
Craig Kelley
